Soon a surrogacy bank in the Netherlands?!
By means of: Mindy Mosk
Not everyone takes having a child for granted. Reasons for this may be that a pregnancy is not possible for medical reasons or that it concerns partners of the same sex or singles. Surrogacy can offer these people a solution to fulfilling their great desire to become a parent. Until recently, the Dutch legislator wanted to discourage surrogacy. At the moment, there is no legislation in the Netherlands on surrogacy. Last summer, the government announced its intention to come up with a regulation for surrogacy.
Commercial surrogacy is prohibited in the Netherlands and will remain prohibited under the new regulation. However, Minister Dekker let it be known that he wants to arrange things properly for prospective parents. The minister is also considering the possibility that surrogate mothers can register somewhere if they want to carry a child for someone else for idealistic reasons. For example, by means of a surrogate mother bank. The minister wants to prevent prospective parents from going abroad: "No abuses in faraway countries with shady practices that we do not want. But simply in the Netherlands on a non-commercial basis".
